Native AirPort front ends on Tahoe: what moved, 2026-10-15 to 2026-10-22

Target: mt7925-hackintosh-wifi-native, a native IO80211 front end on 25G241. Open issues: #1 channel width always 20 MHz, #2 no AWDL. Confidence uses High / Medium / Low / Unverified.

Summary: nothing new solves either open issue. Every "native AirPort on Tahoe" project found this week traces back to laobamac's itlwm at 738d4c6, which we already credit. It also has no AWDL and also reports 20 MHz in scan results.

Actionable

qwz-macos: the same design, reached independently (High, code read). f0xeri/qwz-macos (GPL-2.0, ideas only) runs OpenBSD qwz(4) for a Qualcomm WCN7850 in one kext and a native front end in another.

  • Same design as ours: a C ops table between the two, a build allowlist of 25G241 only, and a HeliPort fallback. Tested on one desktop on 26.7.1.
  • Current-network channel width (#1, current-network half): getCHANNEL in QwzAirportInterface.cpp with CurrentLink.hpp reports 20/40/80/160 MHz and extension-above through APPLE80211_C_FLAG_*, which come from Apple's headers. Its scan results still use a fixed 20 MHz chanspec.
  • Sleep and wake (we have none yet): PowerRecovery.hpp and RadioLifecycle.hpp give the 25G241 power ioctl layout. On wake they replay the user's power state, send POWER_CHANGED, and bracket a reset around the available and unavailable messages.

Credited in our README.

Notable

  • Youtubefan01/airportitlwmtahoe repackages laobamac's itlwm (High): its 31 Tahoe glue files are identical to 738d4c6. Its README names IO80211ControllerV2::createVirtualInterface / attachVirtualInterface and IO80211VirtualInterface as the unused Tahoe hooks for AWDL. That's a pointer for #2; nobody has driven them yet.
  • xnoah222/Realtek-AirPort-Family and Airport_RTW88 take the opposite route (High). On 14.4 and later they inject Ventura's IOSkywalkFamily and the legacy IO80211 family, as OCLP does. That gives working AWDL code, but only on the legacy family. Custom licence, ideas only.

Noise

A Sequoia-pinned Realtek port marked "offline only", and six EFIs that use stock AirportItlwm or OCLP's legacy family.
